Introduction
When Harveyboard first opened its doors in the late 1980s, the print room hummed with the reassuring clack-and-whir of Heidelberg letterpress machines. Fast-forward three decades and that same family-run business in Cheshire now pairs the timeless craftsmanship of those presses with state-of-the-art digital workflows, wide-format inkjet, and on-demand apparel printing. This is the story of how we got from there to here—and why that journey still matters to every flyer, banner or branded hoodie we deliver today.
The Early Days: Heidelberg Heritage
Back in our Stockport origins, a Heidelberg “Windmill” was the beating heart of production. Its precision engineering and cast-iron weight demanded both skill and patience:
- Metal type & hot-foil: Every job began with hand-set type or etched plates, giving each print run a subtly unique character.
- Tactile finishes: Thick inks, deep impressions, and the faint aroma of oil made every business card feel substantial.
- Zero room for error: One mis-set line meant starting again—discipline that still shapes our quality control today.
Those early lessons in accuracy, ink flow and press mechanics built the foundation for everything Harveyboard would later adopt.
Digital Disruption Arrives—and We Lean In
When the first desktop publishing suites and four-colour laser engines appeared in the 1990s, many traditional shops hesitated. We didn’t.
| Then (1990s) | Now (2020s) |
|---|---|
| Film separations couriered overnight | Direct-to-plate & cloud proofing in minutes |
| 2-day make-readies | Same-day turnarounds on urgent jobs |
| Spot-colour limitations | Full CMYK+White & Fluoro on almost any substrate |
By investing early in digital presses—and, equally important, the software that drives them—we unlocked variable-data mailers, micro-runs for start-ups, and colour consistency that the Windmill could only dream of.
The Power of Hybrid Printing
Even with industrial inkjets lining the floor, you’ll still find us pulling those Heidelberg levers a few times each week. Why?
- Authentic texture: Nothing beats the crisp bite of letterpress for luxury invitations or artisan packaging.
- Retro branding: Craft breweries, indie cafés and boutique retailers love a vintage vibe.
- Sustainable reuse: Refurbishing legacy presses extends equipment life and reduces waste.
By blending old and new, we give clients a choice: ultra-modern speed or handcrafted charm—or both in the same campaign.
Three Decades, Five Big Lessons
- Print isn’t dead—mediocre print is. High-impact tangible pieces cut through digital noise.
- Listen first, press later. A ten-minute brief saves a thousand misprints.
- Invest in people before hardware. Skilled operators make the difference between “okay” and “outstanding.”
- Sustainability sells—and it’s the right thing. Recycled stocks and vegetable inks are now default, not optional extras.
- Community counts. Word-of-mouth in Stockport, Congleton, Macclesfield, Crewe and Manchester still drives most of our new orders.
Serving Cheshire & Greater Manchester Today
Since relocating to Congleton, we’ve expanded our reach without losing that local touch:
- Same-day courier to Manchester city-centre & MediaCity.
- On-site surveys for shopfront signage in Macclesfield and Stoke.
- Pop-up event support—from UV-printed roller banners to branded T-shirts—in Nantwich and Crewe.
Wherever you are, you’ll deal with the same core Harveyboard team that’s been perfecting its craft since the Windmill days.
What’s Next?
- Eco-friendly substrates: From seed-embedded postcards to PVC-free banners.
- Augmented-reality print: Marrying print with mobile experiences for richer engagement.
- Expanded garment print hub: Faster DTG (direct-to-garment) runs and embroidery under one roof.
Our mission remains constant: to push print technology forward without losing the human touch that defined us 30 years ago.
Printing Forward: Crafting the Next 30 Years Together
From the rhythmic clatter of our Heidelberg Windmill to the silent precision of modern digital presses, Harveyboard’s story has always been about adapting, innovating, and elevating the print experience for our community. Those decades of evolution have taught us that technology is only as powerful as the people who wield it—and that every sheet, sticker, or sign we produce carries a piece of our family-run heritage. As we look ahead to sustainable materials, augmented-reality enhancements, and ever-faster turnarounds, our commitment remains unchanged: to listen, to create, and to deliver printed solutions that help your brand leave a lasting, tactile impression. Let’s shape the future of print—one inspired project at a time.
